What we are trying to do

Consumer security is a field where the marketing is loud, the technical reality is not especially complicated, and the gap between the two does most of the damage. People buy products that do not address their actual risk, skip the free measures that would, and are frightened into decisions by pages designed to frighten them.

So the editorial line here is consistent across everything we publish:

• Explain the mechanism. A reader who understands how a scanning engine reaches a verdict, or what an encrypted tunnel actually covers, can evaluate any product.
• Name the free option. Including when it competes with the thing we earn commission on.
• State the things that matter more than the purchase. Backups, unique passwords, a second factor, automatic updates. None of these earn us anything and all of them come first.
• Never frighten anybody. No fake scans, no infection warnings, no countdowns.

What we are not

• Not a shop. Nothing is sold here. No payment is taken, no account exists, no order can be placed. Purchases happen on vendors' own sites under their terms.
• Not a testing laboratory. We do not run malware samples and we do not publish detection rates of our own. See how we review.
• Not affiliated with any vendor. We are not part of, endorsed by or sponsored by Gen Digital, Avast Software, Microsoft or anyone else named on this site. We are an affiliate, which means we can earn commission on a referral — it does not make us an agent, a reseller or a representative of anybody.
• Not a support channel. We cannot see your order, reset your licence, issue a refund or fix your installation. Those are matters for the vendor.

How it is paid for

By affiliate commission, and by nothing else. There is no advertising network, no sponsorship, no paid placement and no data sold — we collect none. If you buy through a link marked “partner link”, the vendor pays us a share and your price is unchanged.

The trade-off this creates is disclosed at the top of every page that carries such a link, and the rules we hold ourselves to are written down in the editorial policy.

No tracking

This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics, loads no third-party resource and stores nothing in your browser. That is why you were never asked to accept anything. The cookie policy explains how to verify it yourself in your browser's developer tools.
